These pipes may have been used for smoking opium, according to 'Art of Nagaland. The Barbier-Muller Collection Geneva' (Geneva, 1984), p. 76. Only men who had captured at least one head were allowed to possess such pipes. The carving on the stem shows stylised figures and skulls. This one is carved in an early style and has a lovely rich patina.
