Sakalava Prayer Mat

Sakalava people, West Coast of Madagascar, 19th century

Ikat dyed rafia with natural dyes

44" (h) x 27" (w)

This extremely rare textile was made by the Sakalava people of Northwest Madagascar. There is a small stain above the central mihrab which is a sign of its frequent use for prayer by its former owner.  The mat was collected in Gujarat.
